Key Bible Passages: Romans 12:15-18, Acts 15:36-40, Philippians 2:3-8, 4:2

Discussion

  1. Have you ever had a conflict with a friend that was so significant it threatened to damage or destroy the friendship? Share the experience with the group.
  2. The message mentioned three “tools” we often use to get our way in relationships: convince, convict, and control. Which one do you use most and how?
  3. Read Philippians 2:3-4. Does this teaching seem unrealistic? Can you think of someone who embodies this ideal well?
  4. Read Philippians 2:5-8. Paul says this should be our attitude in relationships with others. How would this relate to conflict in relationships (ours with God and ours with others)?
  5. Jesus embodied three different “tools”: serve, submit, and sacrifice. Which of these is most difficult for you in relationships and conflicts with others?
  6. What is the danger in thinking that Jesus’ sacrifice far outweighs anything we could ever do and that following his example is impractical?
  7. How did this message and these passages challenge you personally? Is there one relationship in your life where this seems impossible?

Moving Forward

Each morning over the next week, read Philippians 2:5-8 substituting someone’s name in verse: “In your relationship with _________________, have the same mindset . . . ”

If there is someone you are currently in conflict with, consider how you might reach out to them to talk through the conflict.
