The first letter we have written to the earliest followers of Jesus has a surprising message for us.

Key Bible Passage: Galatians 3:26-4:11

Two Activities

  1. Take 15-20 minutes during your group time to reflect individually. Consider playing some worship music in the background and providing art supplies or paper and pens for journaling. Encourage your group members to spend this time processing through the following questions and talking with God.

-How has your earthly father impacted your view of God as Father?

-When you think about being adopted as God’s child, what emotions does it evoke?

-How does it make you want to respond?

Then, come together and debrief your reflections. You may decide to go through the three questions one by one, allowing people to share their specific answers if they choose. Or, you may decide to debrief more generally, asking questions like:

-What stood out to you from your reflection time?

-What did you say to God?

-What, if anything, did you sense God saying to you?

  1. Read Galatians 3:28. Then, as a group, brainstorm a list of divisions you see in our culture (or even in the church) today. Don’t just think in broad terms like race or gender. Get more specific. We draw lines between people and create categories all the time. (For example, if you simply look at how people parent their kids, there are a million categories you can create – there are parents who let their babies cry until they fall asleep vs. parents who do not, moms who nurse vs. moms who use formula, parents who send their kids to public school vs. private school vs. homeschooling, etc.)

Next, ask, “What’s one group of people you’re tempted to subtly look down on, make assumptions about, or deem as less worthy (either from the list we created or another group of people that’s coming to your mind)? Go around the room and ask each person to share.

Finally, pray for each other. Ask for forgiveness and pray that God would give you His eyes to see people as He sees them.
