Whether we know it or not, we’re all imitators. Ideas and behaviors – memes – spread from person to person every day. It’s a core part of human culture and always has been. The question is who and what are we imitating?

- Richard Dawkins defined a meme as a “unit of cultural transmission.” He said “Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or building arches.” What are some specific examples of memes?
- Rene Girard asserted that we imitate the desires of others. What’s a recent desire you’ve had that you now realize was mostly imitated from someone else?
- How do you respond to the idea of “imitating Jesus”? Does it seem impossible, exciting, exhausting, unappealing, or (fill in the blank)?
- Who are the examples in your life? Who are you really following?
- What would it require from you to begin following Jesus, not just in your “beliefs” but in all your actions and ways?
- What keeps you from trying to follow Jesus in every aspect of your life?
- Read 1 Corinthians 11:1. Is there anyone in your life who is like Paul–someone you can imitate as they imitate Jesus?
