Moving Beyond Belief, Part 4 – Share

January 23, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

So far we’ve looked at the personal and communal nature of our belief. As we grow in our faith we are changed personally and corporately, but are there implications for our belief outside our lives and outside the community of faith? Join us as we explore the public dimension of belief.

In this message Stephen refers to a video which you can watch online here: Read more

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 3 – Grow

January 17, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

Last week we explored the new identity we have in Jesus after we believe. This week we look at how we live and grow into that identity.

For reference:

This week we talk about spiritual practices that help us grow into our identity in Christ. If you’re interested in reading more about spiritual practices and how we grow spiritually check out these books:

  • The Life You Always Wanted by John Ortberg – This book is a great place to begin exploring the practices or disciplines of the Christian life. (If you enjoy this book you might want to also read Ortberg’s The Me I Want to Be)
  • The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard – This book is a little “meatier” and more theological or academic than Ortberg’s work but is still very practical and approachable.
  • Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster – Like Willard this book can feel a bit more academic, but it is a classic work on living out the Christian life that is well worth the effort.

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 2 – Identity

January 9, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

This week we begin our exploration of what happens after you believe. Guided by the book of Colossians we discover that something changes in us after belief, something core to who we are.

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 1 – Belief

January 2, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

This week we begin by looking at the idea of belief to find the connection between what we say and how we live. What is the basis of our belief as a church, and what is it that we each believe personally?
