FAQ The Series, Part 7

We all have tough questions. Especially when we watch the news, read the Bible, or try to believe in a good God. In this series, we’ll explore the hardest questions that challenge our journeys of faith. This week we explore the question, is there really a hell (and is it fiery and eternal)?

Key Bible Passages: Matthew 7:13-14; 8:10-12; 23:27, 33; John 3:16

Discussion

1. What did you grow up believing about heaven and hell (whether from your church, parents, or other sources, even if you did not grow up with a religious background)?

2. How often do you think about hell now? What triggers your thoughts?

3. Does the idea of hell make you uncomfortable? Why or why not?

4. The message mentioned some ways of understanding hell that are different than simply disbelieving in it or the Dante-inspired version of hell as a place of endless fiery torture. They were:

  • Maybe hell is empty; God’s love ultimately wins.
  • Maybe hell is the absence of God’s presence for those who persistently reject him.
  • Maybe God gives way more chances to respond to him than we’re aware of.
  • Maybe hell is dehumanization: the shrinking of the self to nothingness without God.
  • Maybe hell is self-destruction and eternal life is simply a gift.
  • Maybe “heaven” and “hell” begin now.

Which of these suggestions do you find appealing and why?

5. Why is it important to think and talk about heaven and hell?

6. How has God challenged you with this message or discussion? Is there something he might be saying to you?

7. If so, what are you going to do about it?

Moving Forward

Pray the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) every morning during the coming week. Pause during the prayer to insert your own words regarding your life: “your kingdom come to my job, to my neighborhood, to my broken relationship with _________, to my attitude of __________, etc.”
