Jonah, Part 5 – In a Great Rage

February 27, 2011

The good guys win, the bad guys lose, and everyone gets what’s coming to them. It’s the moral to most stories and the conclusion to most great movies. And it’s a belief that we all live by. But what if it isn’t true? What if neither the good guys nor the bad guys get what they really deserve? The story of Jonah raises that question and ends on a surprising note.

Jonah, Part 4 – In a Great City

February 20, 2011

What keeps us from trusting God? Why do we sometimes dig our heels in and resist doing what he tells us? Jonah is the perfect example. Despite all his stubbornness though, God decides to give Jonah another chance. And when Jonah finally gives in, the result is both extraordinary and challenging.

Jonah, Part 3 – In a Great Fish

February 13, 2011

What happens when you’re stuck in a huge fish for three days? How do you pray in circumstances like that? It’s a pretty incredible part of Jonah’s story, but if we move past the question of whether it really happened or not, there’s something profound we can learn from his experience and his prayer.

Note: two book recommendations about prayer were made during this sermon. They are A Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie and Praying With the Psalms by Eugene Peterson.

Jonah, Part 2 – In a Great Storm

February 6, 2011

We all know what it’s like to take matters into our own hands. When our way seems best and we don’t really want to listen to God. It usually doesn’t go very well. So Jonah’s troubles after running away from God come as no surprise to us. What is surprising is what we learn about God. God is trying to teach Jonah–and us–something important.

In this series we are also giving our small groups the opportunity to continue the conversation each week in their groups through our Jonah Small Group Study Guide. Just click here to download the guide if you’d like to get more from this intriguing book.

Jonah, Part 1 – In a Great Hurry

January 30, 2011

Sometimes God speaks to us. Maybe not with an audible voice or writing on the wall, but with gentle nudges that push us outside our comfort zones. And sometimes, like Jonah, we just don’t want to hear it. We can learn a lot from Jonah’s experience. How does God speak to us? Why do often ignore him? And where will that take us?

If you’d like to continue the conversation about Jonah, we have a small group study guide that will follow along with this series. Click here to download the guide.
