At New Denver Church we think of ourselves as a family on mission – a mission to lead people in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. This idea of family on mission comes from Jesus himself: While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:46-50)

Being part of a family is not passive but participatory. It calls us to give and not just to receive, and to work together toward our shared mission. Being a family calls all of us as individuals to bring what we’ve been given – our time, our gifts and abilities, and our resources – for the benefit of others as well as ourselves.
