In part 1-3 of this series we’ve explored what God has to say about our work – the productive, creative endeavors that fill our days. We found that work is what we were created to do, and that God has a lot to say about how we do it. But what is God up to these days? What work is God still doing, and what implications does that have for us and the work that we do?

We were all created to work. It’s part of how God made us, but for most of us, we have a lot more going on in our life than just work. We have personal responsibilities, we have relational responsibilities, we have hobbies, and for families, we have family responsibilities. When you put them all together, there’s more to do than we have time to do it. So in the face of this tension, what do we do? We cheat. Every day we choose to cheat something, somewhere and we cheat someone. The question is, where are you cheating? And is that the right place to cheat?

As we step back from the individual circumstances of our working life, good or bad, and begin to look at what we do through the lens of faith there is a tension we must address. While we want to work with all our heart as if working for God, some days we’re not really sure why we do what we do. We go to work and wonder what all our work amounts to and are we heading in the right direction. These questions are related to our vocation – our calling, but where does calling come from? Read more

Work consumes a lot of our time, energy, and emotion. And often the way that we think about our work is defined by our circumstances – how our week is going, how we feel about our current job, or our current supervisor. But what if we took a step back and thought about our work through the lens of our faith? How does God want us to think about our work in the context of our whole life?
