New to New Denver?
If you’re thinking about visiting New Denver Church for one of our worship services, here are a few things to help you know what to expect when you come.
Worship Services
When and where? We gather weekly at 9:00am and 5:00pm on Sundays. We have a worship service for adults as well as environments for children (see below). We meet at 700 Bonnie Brae Blvd which is in central Denver near the University of Denver, Wash Park and the Cherry Creek shopping area. From I-25, you’ll take the University Blvd. exit and head north. The church is visible from University Blvd. at the intersection with Bonnie Brae Blvd. and Exposition Av. There is parking behind the church, which you can enter from Exposition Ave, and an entrance to the church from the parking lot.
What to expect? Our services last about 1 hour and 15 minutes and usually include hearing about what’s happening in our community, worship with music, and a time of teaching. It’s hard to define a musical style, but if we had to, we’d say that we’re “progressive.” We sing newer songs written by artists like Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, and Steve Fee. We also sing some well-known hymns of the Christian faith, especially in light of their lyrical substance. But if you’re desiring a more “traditional” music style, you’ll probably never hear an organ or harp at New Denver Church. If you’re new to church or Christianity, the best way to describe our style is to say that we like indie music as well as popular bands like U2, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Switchfoot, Green Day…stuff like that.
During the teaching time (sermon), we usually explain a passage of the Bible. Even though the Bible is an ancient book, we believe it still has great wisdom for us as we navigate difficult relationships, career moves, financial decisions, and the tough issues of life. More than anything, we think the Bible offers a hopeful message for finding meaning and purpose in a relationship with God. In light of that, our pastors work hard to be understandable and helpful wherever you are on your journey of faith. Every month or so, we celebrate communion (also called the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist). It’s open to anyone who follows Jesus, but participation is optional.
You don’t have to dress up to attend New Denver Church. In fact, we’re pretty casual and laid back. When you come, hopefully you’ll meet some new people and connect in meaningful ways with others. But if you just want to come, sit in the back, and “check things out,” that’s fine too.
Families
If you have children, we hope you’ll bring them with you! We have great programs for children during our worship services, from infants through elementary school. First and foremost, our children’s environments are clean and safe. We take this very seriously. All of our volunteers have had background checks and been trained to work with children. They serve during the worship service so that you can enjoy your experience knowing that your children are in good hands.
Our environment for babies and preschoolers is called Waumba Land. “Waumba” is the Swahilian word for “creator” and Waumba Land is where our babies and preschoolers are cared for in small groups. During their time, our volunteers focus on helping your children to know three things:
- God loves me
- God made me
- Jesus wants to be my friend forever
UpStreet is where our children from kindergarten through 5th grade meet in a blend of small and large groups to learn about the Bible, worship through singing, and build friendships with other kids and adult leaders. It’s never boring, always loud, and guided by the best leaders on the planet! There are three values we teach in UpStreet:
- I need to make the wise choice
- I can trust God no matter what
- I should treat others the way I want to be treated
Both Waumba Land and Upstreet are open 15 minutes before the beginning of the service to begin checking children in. When you check your children in, we will ask you to fill out some basic information and then give you a number so that only you can pick them up after the service ends. If you would like to provide this information ahead of time, visit this link to fill the form and we’ll make sure the check-in process goes smoothly and quickly.
