In the Community
At New Denver Church our goal is to address the pressing issues facing our community. To accomplish this goal, our strategy is to partner with local organizations who are focused on addressing these needs. Currently, New Denver Church is partnering with the following organizations:
SAME Cafe
It is the intent of SAME Cafe to build a healthy community by providing a basic need of food in a respectful and dignified manner to anyone who walks through the door. SAME Cafe is unique in the lack of a set menu as well as set prices. Daily selections are made using fresh, organic ingredients, and funded by the donations of patrons. Instead of a cash register, a donation box is available for one to pay what they felt their meal was worth, or to leave a little more and help out someone less fortunate. If a diner does not have sufficient money to leave, they are encouraged to exchange an hour of service. Our philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. For more information you can go to the SAME Cafe website.
If you’re interested in volunteering at SAME Cafe, there are 1-hour shifts available from 11:00am to 2:00pm, Monday through Saturday. Go to the SAME Volunteer page for more information or to sign up. Note: You must be at least 16 years old to serve at SAME.
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver builds and sells homes to hard-working people in need of decent and affordable housing. They are an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-denominational Christian housing ministry and global home-building movement. Habitat welcomes all people, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or any other difference, to join us and build homes for people in need.
New Denver Church is one of several local churches who have joined the Forward Faith Network to partner with Habitat in 2010 to develop the Bails Neighborhood Project. The Bails project is Habitat’s first transit-oriented development in metro Denver. It is a compact, walkable, green community of 24 townhomes centered around existing transit systems. We have committed $8000 and 50 volunteers over the next four months of this project.
To give toward this project you can write your check to New Denver Church and put “Habitat project” in the memo line. To volunteer just go to the Future Faith Network volunteer site and click one of the dates reserved for New Denver or a date open to all churches. Please only sign up for a spot reserved for New Denver or open to all churches in the network – do not sign up for the days reserved for other churches. If all of these spots are filled or you would like to see more options for serving with Habitat, you can go directly to the Habitat Denver volunteer website to sign up for one of the days open to the public.
Denver Rescue Mission
During the year, the Denver Rescue Mission (DRM) provides shelter, food, clothing, education, Christian teaching, and work discipline to meet individuals at their physical and spiritual points of need. Our chief goal is to meet people at their physical and spiritual points of need. We provide food, shelter, and clothing, along with practical programs of education, Christian teaching, and work discipline with the aim of returning the poor, needy, and homeless to society as self-sufficient, productive citizens. The Denver Rescue Mission operates five facilities in the Denver-metro area:
- The Crossing is a residential living facility offering the New Life rehabilitation program for men; transitional housing for program graduates and homeless families; and housing for interns and visitors.
- Champa House is a safe, loving home offering long-term help toward self-sufficiency to single mothers and their children. Amenities include 9 apartments, on-site childcare, common living area, long-term rehabilitation program, and educational opportunities.
- Harvest Farm is a rural rehabilitation facility for men, located in Wellington, Colorado. 72 men reside on the 100-acre working farm, which features a comprehensive long-term rehabilitation program including on-site education and work training. The Farm also offers Client Services and a summer camp for youth.
- Lawrence Street, our flagship facility, is a men’s shelter with 200 overnight beds, and an outreach location offering meals, clothing, free health care, and Client Services.
- The Ministry Outreach Center (MOC) receives, warehouses, and distributes donated goods, provides Client Services, and is the administrative home to DRM staff.
If you are interested in volunteering with DRM, there are an extensive list of opportunities described on the DRM volunteer website. To browse through upcoming opportunities or to sign up to volunteer, you can go to the DRM volunteer sign up website. If it is your first time serving with DRM, you will need to create an account in their volunteer system.
