New Series: From Easter

April 28, 2011

Where do we go from Easter? The disciples of Jesus weren’t so sure. In fact, they were confused, afraid, and doubted what they saw. And after abandoning Jesus just a few days before, they felt like utter failures. So they went back to fishing. Nothing really changed…until they spent time with Jesus again and he told them how to live a life from Easter. Join us May 1, 8, 15 and 22 as we explore the difference Easter should make in our world and in our everyday lives.

To Easter, Part 4 – To Live

April 24, 2011

Easter stands at the center of the Christian faith. Every year we celebrate the holiday and remember the last events of Jesus’ life, and in our culture even people who don’t follow Jesus join in the celebration by joining in egg hunts, buying Easter baskets, and new spring clothes! But do we really understand Easter? Beyond the Sunday-school answer, “Jesus died for our sins” do we really know what we’re celebrating?

This week we arrive at Easter – our destination in this series. Jesus is dead – crucified and laid in the tomb. It’s the end of the Jesus movement. Kill the messiah, kill the movement – right? So why are we still talking about him? How did Christianity make it out of the first century? Join us as we explore the resurrection – the event that changes everything.

To Easter, Part 3 – To Follow

April 17, 2011

Easter stands at the center of the Christian faith. Every year we celebrate the holiday and remember the last events of Jesus’ life, and in our culture even people who don’t follow Jesus join in the celebration by joining in egg hunts, buying Easter baskets, and new spring clothes! But do we really understand Easter? Beyond the Sunday-school answer, “Jesus died for our sins” do we really know what we’re celebrating?

This week we take the next step to Easter by looking at Israel’s anticipation of God’s New Covenant and the messiah. What happens when hundreds of years of expectations collide with the reality of a Jesus?

Good Friday Tenebrae Service

April 15, 2011

This year New Denver Church is partnering with Bloom Church, The Next Level Church, Denver Community Church, and the Sanctuary to present a Good Friday Tenebrae service. “Tenebrae” is an ancient liturgical tradition celebrated in various ways during Holy Week by each major branch of Christianity; Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. The word “tenebrae” is a Latin word meaning simply “shadow” or “darkness.” The service consists of a series of readings from Mark’s gospel, moments of silence and reflection, and songs that are intended to orient our imaginations and help us worship towards Christ and his Cross. As the service progresses, candles are extinguished, and the mood in the sanctuary becomes increasingly more somber until Christ “breathes his last” and the final candle is extinguished. The congregation then leaves in darkness and silence in anticipation of the rising again of the Light of the World. Tenebrae is spiritual preparation for Easter par excellence.

So join us on Good Friday – April 22 – for this special service. The service will start at 9:00 pm, and there is no child care provided. The service will take place at Colorado Community Church near the intersection of S. Colorado and E. Hamden (click here for directions).

To Easter, Part 2 – To Obey

April 11, 2011

Easter stands at the center of the Christian faith. Every year we celebrate the holiday and remember the last events of Jesus’ life, and in our culture even people who don’t follow Jesus join in the celebration by joining in egg hunts, buying Easter baskets, and new spring clothes! But do we really understand Easter? Beyond the Sunday-school answer, “Jesus died for our sins” do we really know what we’re celebrating?

This week we continue our journey to Easter as we explore what God did with the mess man made of his creation. How did God take the first step toward restoring what was broken?

To Easter, Part 1 – To Trust

April 4, 2011

Easter stands at the center of the Christian faith. Every year we celebrate the holiday and remember the last events of Jesus’ life, and in our culture even people who don’t follow Jesus join in the celebration by joining in egg hunts, buying Easter baskets, and new spring clothes! But do we really understand Easter? Beyond the Sunday-school answer, “Jesus died for our sins” do we really know what we’re celebrating?

This week we begin the journey to Easter by going to the beginning of the story. What happened between God and man that brought us to where we are, and what is our first step in moving To Easter?
