Upside Down, Part 4

March 29, 2011

We all want to be happy. And if God is a good God, he wants us to be happy too, right? Why, then, does Jesus say bizarre things like, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” and “Blessed are those who mourn”? And why does Paul say that “God chose the foolish [and the weak and the lowly] things of the world”? That makes no sense! In fact, that’s exactly right. It doesn’t make sense…

New Series: To Easter

March 28, 2011

Easter stands at the center of the Christian faith. Every year we celebrate the holiday and remember the last events of Jesus’ life, and in our culture even people who don’t follow Jesus join in the celebration by joining in egg hunts, buying Easter baskets, and new spring clothes! But do we really understand Easter? Beyond the Sunday-school answer, “Jesus died for our sins” do we really know what we’re celebrating? What is sin, and why did Jesus have to die for it? Couldn’t God just forgive us and move on? Does it matter if we really believe Jesus rose from the dead or not? Join us April 3, 10, 17 (Palm Sunday), and 24 (Easter Sunday) for our new series as we tackle these questions and more on our way To Easter.

Second Annual Wash Park Easter Egg Hunt

March 25, 2011

Hundreds of young Easter egg hunters and their families will again converge on Washington Park for the Second Annual Wash Park Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 23rd. Anyone and everyone is invited so be sure to bring your friends and family. Ten thousand eggs will be filled with treats for the kids plus there will be face painting, games, music, and a professional family
photographer. The event will take place on the south end of the main field. Separate areas will be set up for both preschool and elementary age children so all ages are welcome.

The schedule for the day is as follows:
  • 1:00pm – Pre-school-age kids’ Easter egg scramble
  • 1:00pm-2:00pm – Games and Races for all ages
  • 2:00pm – Elementary-age kids’ Easteregg scramble
Last year’s event was a big success and it promises to become a cherished neighborhood tradition. So join us on Saturday, April 23rd for a great day of family fun! If you have any questions about the event you can email us at [email protected].

Upside Down, Part 3

Upside Down, Part 2 – Beauty from Pain

March 17, 2011

We all want to be happy. And if God is a good God, he wants us to be happy too, right? Why, then, does Jesus say bizarre things like, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” and “Blessed are those who mourn”? And why does Paul say that “God chose the foolish [and the weak and the lowly] things of the world”? That makes no sense! In fact, that’s exactly right. It doesn’t make sense…

Sometimes life doesn’t go the way you’d like it to. In fact, sometimes it downright stinks. Where’s God in these moments, and why does it seem like he doesn’t care? Could it be that God is actually present in our pain? Could it be that He could actually use adversity for good?

Lent

March 9, 2011

Have you ever observed Lent?

If you grew up in liturgical church, you’re probably familiar with the tradition of Lent. But you may not have understood exactly why your church observed it. Or, perhaps Lent simply felt like a ritual to you with little to no relevance to your daily life. If you didn’t grow up in the church, or in a church that celebrated Lent, it may be a foreign concept for you. With all that in mind, and even though New Denver Church isn’t a “liturgical” church per se, we want to encourage you to think about celebrating Lent this year. Here’s a little bit of background.
