Jonah, Part 1 – In a Great Hurry

January 30, 2011

Sometimes God speaks to us. Maybe not with an audible voice or writing on the wall, but with gentle nudges that push us outside our comfort zones. And sometimes, like Jonah, we just don’t want to hear it. We can learn a lot from Jonah’s experience. How does God speak to us? Why do often ignore him? And where will that take us?

If you’d like to continue the conversation about Jonah, we have a small group study guide that will follow along with this series. Click here to download the guide.

Jonah

January 24, 2011

He’s one of history’s most famous runners. Indeed, many of our children know his legendary tale about being swallowed by a “whale.” But there’s so much more to the story of Jonah than storms and sea creatures. And there may be no better place in the whole Bible to get a clear picture of what God is really like. Join us for a new series beginning January 30 about the man who ran and the God who ran after him.

In this series we are also giving our small groups the opportunity to continue the conversation each week in their groups through our Jonah Small Group Study Guide. Just click here to download the guide if you’d like to get more from this intriguing book.

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 4 – Share

January 23, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

So far we’ve looked at the personal and communal nature of our belief. As we grow in our faith we are changed personally and corporately, but are there implications for our belief outside our lives and outside the community of faith? Join us as we explore the public dimension of belief.

In this message Stephen refers to a video which you can watch online here: Read more

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 3 – Grow

January 17, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

Last week we explored the new identity we have in Jesus after we believe. This week we look at how we live and grow into that identity.

For reference:

This week we talk about spiritual practices that help us grow into our identity in Christ. If you’re interested in reading more about spiritual practices and how we grow spiritually check out these books:

  • The Life You Always Wanted by John Ortberg – This book is a great place to begin exploring the practices or disciplines of the Christian life. (If you enjoy this book you might want to also read Ortberg’s The Me I Want to Be)
  • The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard – This book is a little “meatier” and more theological or academic than Ortberg’s work but is still very practical and approachable.
  • Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster – Like Willard this book can feel a bit more academic, but it is a classic work on living out the Christian life that is well worth the effort.

Clothes Drive for Future Business Leaders

January 13, 2011

FBLAColorado Future Business Leaders of America is hosting a district leadership conference next month, and there are some underprivileged kids from local high schools who want to participate but need business clothes. If you’d like to help, just bring new or gently used business or business-casual clothes for men or women to New Denver no later than Sunday, February 6th. If you have specific questions or want to arrange a drop off during the week, contact our drive coordinator Kimberly Vouriotis ([email protected]).

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 2 – Identity

January 9, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

This week we begin our exploration of what happens after you believe. Guided by the book of Colossians we discover that something changes in us after belief, something core to who we are.

Moving Beyond Belief, Part 1 – Belief

January 2, 2011

The new year is a fresh start. It’s a chance to look back on your life, evaluate where you are, and think about where you’re headed. It’s an opportunity to rethink some things in your life and begin anew. But where do you start? How do you avoid mistakes of the past and forge a better future?

This week we begin by looking at the idea of belief to find the connection between what we say and how we live. What is the basis of our belief as a church, and what is it that we each believe personally?
