On Mission, Part 3 – The Last
August 29, 2010
Due to a technical error with the computer that records our worship services, the last message in the On Mission series was lost and will not be available. This message was an interview with our Guatemala mission team so if you’re interested in learning more about what New Denver is doing in Guatemala check out our In the World page as well as the blog updates from the Guatemala team’s trip.
On Mission, Part 2 – The Least
August 22, 2010
Why do you come to church? Hopefully, it helps you grow in your own personal faith—but is there more to it than that? Is there are a larger reason or mission for the church to exist? Join us for a new message series entitled On Missionabout our community’s mission to join God in his renewal and restoration of our world.
This week Jason explores Christianity’s “image problem.” If we are devoted to following a loving, giving, caring God, then why is Christianity perceived so negatively in our culture? What can we do to change that perception? The answer comes from an Old Testament prophet speaking to some of the same failures in ancient Israel.

Vision Night
August 16, 2010
Where have we come from? Where are we going? Friday, August 27th from 7:00pm-9:00pm we will host our first Vision Night – an evening to look back at our first year as a church and to look forward to what God has ahead for us. This event is open to anyone who attends New Denver and is interested in hearing more about where we’re headed as a church. Dinner will be served and we will have child care if you need it (since this event ends at 9pm, child care reimbursement is also available if you’d prefer to use a babysitter at your home). To register, please click here to RSVP for this event.

Guatemala Vision Trip Report
August 13, 2010
Friday night, 9:40 pm (from Norton)
Tomorrow, a small team of folks from New Denver is traveling to Guatemala for a week. We’ll be spending time with the good folks of Healing Waters International (HWI) and also developing relationships with three different churches in rural villages in the Mayan highlands. For background on why we chose Guatemala, see here.
Throughout our trip, we’ll try to add periodic updates to this post to share a little about what we’re doing and learning. In the meantime, pray for Norton, Janis, Townsend, Michael, Amanda, and Quinn–that we would have a safe and healthy trip, that we would develop some great relationships with potential long-term partners, and that we would be inspired as God shows us how he’s working in a different corner of the world. In the Beginning, Part 3 – Why the Bible Matters
August 1, 2010
This is part three of a new series that is different than anything we’ve ever done. We’re exploring some tough questions that have perplexed many believers and also given doubts to those outside the faith who are skeptical about Christianity: Is it possible to believe in the claims of both science and faith? What about creation and evolution? Aren’t they incompatible? How do we make sense of Genesis if the scientists are telling us it can’t be true? In this message, we go to Genesis to discover more about what the Bible has to say about creation and look for clues or how we can integrate the perspective we find there with the claims of science.

Recommended Resources for Creation/Evolution Question
August 1, 2010
In light of our recent message series, In the Beginning, I want to suggest some recommended resources if you want to explore the issue of creation and evolution more extensively. As I said during the series, we don’t take a position at New Denver Church on this issue. We think it’s important to look at all the scientific evidence and to study Genesis 1-2 well in order to understand the original intent/meaning of the creation accounts. But we don’t think this is a central issue for the Christian faith. Genuine, intelligent Christians have drawn different conclusions about how the world and human life were created and we have respect for all those positions.
Note: Since the Intelligent Design (ID) movement doesn’t address the Bible/Genesis One, I haven’t included anything from them here. And of course, regarding the resources we do recommend below, we’re not necessarily endorsing any one of them. Okay, enough qualifiers…
- For an overall discussion of the three main Christian views–young earth creationism, old earth creationism, and theistic evolution–see Three Views on Creation and Evolution edited by J.P. Moreland and John Mark Reynolds.
- For a good explanation of the literal, 24-hour day young earth creationist viewpoint, see “Why Does the Universe Look So Old?” by Albert Mohler. The video is here and the transcript is here.
- For overall resources regarding the young earth creationist viewpoint, see www.answersingenesis.org.
- For overall resources regarding the old earth creationist viewpoint (which accepts an old earth, but rejects evolution), see www.reasons.org.
- For an interesting book on the history of evolution, see Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory by Edward Larson.
- For a good discussion of the age of the earth and how it relates to the Bible from a geologists’ viewpoint, see The Bible, Rocks and Time: Geological Evidence for the Age of the Earth by Davis A. Young and Ralph F. Stearley.
- For a defense of the theistic evolution viewpoint–that God brought about life on earth using biological evolution–from a geneticist’s perspective, see The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis Collins.
- For an understanding of the ancient cosmology viewpoint–that Genesis 1 portrays the world as an ancient temple–see The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate by John Walton.
- For overall resources on the theistic evolution viewpoint, see www.biologos.org.
