Superbowl Sunday!

January 13, 2010

So, Superbowl XLIV is February 7th; kickoff is around 4:30 pm mountain time. Which poses quite a dilemma for us since our worship services and family ministries environments are on Sundays at 5:00 pm. Do we just ignore the Superbowl and go on with services? Do we replace our services and children’s environments with a Superbowl party? Do we cancel services? As we discussed the issue with our Leadership Community, we came away with a unanimous decision. Let me briefly explain how it unfolded.

Worship, teaching, and gathering as a community is important to us, so we didn’t want to just cancel services for a football game. And yet, as we thought about the Superbowl, we realized that it’s one of the most important “holidays” in our culture. It’s a time where virtually everyone, regardless of whether they are football fans or not, gathers in people’s homes to eat, hang out, watch the game (and all the expensive commercials!), and simply enjoy community together. We thought: isn’t this what our church is about–relationships and community? What a great opportunity for small groups to hang out together and watch the game. What an even better opportunity to throw Superbowl parties in our homes and invite neighbors and friends who aren’t part of our church. Going to church is important to our faith, and we do that most other Sundays of the year. So why not take this Sunday to enjoy relationships?

With that in mind, we’re not going to have church on February 7th. Instead, “have church” in your home, invite your neighbors and friends, and enjoy the game! So, the schedule for the next few weeks is:

January 17, 24, and 31: Regular services and children’s environments at 5 pm
February 7: No services: Superbowl parties instead!
February 14: No services: Second Sunday service project
February 21: Resume regular schedule of services and children’s environments at 5 pm
