Thoughts from the Road
December 26, 2008
Well, the Herbst family is on the road. When we left Denver three and half years ago for a new life in Georgia, we wondered if we would ever come back. Janis and I were off to work for a great church, in a great city, and hopefully about to start a family. Little did we know that between April 2007 and April 2008, we would go from a family of 2 to a family of 5 (!!!), and on top of that, decide to move back to Denver to help start a church. Life is crazy.
This week, we’re on the road back to Denver (via NC after Christmas with family) and I’ve had some time to reflect on the move. I won’t bore you with up to the minute updates, but I did want to share a few thoughts.
Last week, I had my last day at work at North Point. Everyone kept asking me how I was doing. I’m not totally sure why they kept asking, so I kept answering “just fine” because (a) I’m an emotionally repressed person, (b) I’m just anxious to get to Colorado, so I’m thinking more about the future than reflecting on the past, or (c) I’m in super task mode right now and don’t have the energy or time for long good-byes. Or (d) all of the above .
Packing to move has been crazy. Three lessons I’ve learned. (1) Things go a lot slower with three little kids (okay, I’ve been learning this lesson for a year now, but I keep having to relearn it.) (2) The last 10 % of packing and cleaning take forever. Note to Stephen and Jason: start packing now; starting cleaning now. You will put it off. Don’t. (3) The one good thing about packing is purging…using the opportunity to get rid of all the stuff you don’t need that you think you need but haven’t used in years and really just need to give to someone who does need it.
One thing that added a bit of stress to our lives recently was that our mortgage company, which had already pre-approved us, decided to de-approve us seven days before closing on our new house in Denver. It was a healthy reminder that we’re not in control and even though another mortgage company came through (and we got a lower rate!), it forced us to trust God once again in this time of transition.
Last Sunday was our last day at church. I won’t say too much about North Point since I would probably just be echoing everything that Stephen has written over the last month or so, but it was definitely a great Sunday for our last, and we couldn’t be more grateful to the impact that North Point and all our friends there have had on us.
Final random tidbits:
- Things that are great: McDonald’s playlands, Elmo videos, Wild Cherry M&Ms, REI gift cards for Christmas, the Appalachian Mtns., starting a church from scratch, doing it with great friends.
- Things that aren’t so great: McDonald’s food, Kentucky police officers who show little mercy on parents who have sick kids crying in the backs of their cars and therefore happen to drift above the speed limit for a few minutes, different hotel rooms each night four days in a row.
That’s it for now. Hard to believe this is finally happening. A week from today I’ll be the first official employee of Denver Ministries.
