Cool Stories

December 14, 2008

I just returned from Browns Bridge Community Church where I had the pleasure of baptizing one of my former Starting Point group members. Dawn’s story is like many, in some ways, and unique in others.

Dawn grew up in a home where God and church weren’t big parts of her life. So when she met Rob, her soon-to-be husband, who was pretty active in church, she felt compelled to “give God a try.” Rob attended another church, but had heard about Starting Point, and how it was a comfortable place for people to explore faith and experience community. They enrolled in Starting Point together, and though Dawn gave very little indication that she was enjoying the experience, God was at work. Through non-threatening spiritual conversations, her first real exposure to the Bible, and hearing the stories of many people who had similar questions about God, Dawn was changed. She embraced God, and began pursuing him.

Now, almost a year later, she and Rob are married, have joined a community group, are active in church, and are getting ready to have their first child! It’s been a pretty incredible journey. And the best part was getting to hear Dawn tell her story in front of a few thousand people this morning. She was nervous but proud to be proclaiming her allegiance with God.

We think there are many, many people like Dawn in and around the Denver area: those who are ambivalent or maybe even complacent about spiritual matters. But one day, God’s going to intersect their lives. And when he does, we’re hoping to be a community of people who follow Jesus, embody his grace, and extend his love to them.

Thanks, Dawn, for your story, and your courage in sharing it with the world. You are an inspiration.
